Background

RDC is represented in Germany by the holding company RDC Deutschland GmbH (RDC-D), and holds interests in two operating companies:  RDC AUTOZUG Sylt GmbH (AZS) and BahnTouristikExpress GmbH (BTE). Incorporated since January 2009, RDC Deutschland GmbH (RDC-D) is privately-owned by RDC and has offices in Hamburg and Niebüll.

  • From July 2012, RDC-D began operating the open access intercity passenger service Hamburg-Köln Express GmbH (HKX) between Cologne and Hamburg. In December 2015 through services to Frankfurt am Main were operated on a 6-month trial service but discontinued due to low demand. From March 2018 to March 2020 FlixTrain handled development, sales, and marketing of the Hamburg-Köln route as well as a new Berlin-Köln route, while RDC-D partner BTE handled operations and fleet management.
  • In February 2016, RDC-D founded RDC AUTOZUG Sylt GmbH as the first privately-owned railway company to offer train service for passengers and their cars between the German mainland and the island of Sylt. Operations began Autumn 2016.
  • In May 2016, RDC-D entered a partnership with BTE BahnTouristikExpress GmbH (BTE), a private passenger rail charter provider in Germany, for joint passenger rail ventures. BTE has over 20 years' experience in the German market. BTE served as the operator for FlixTrain services. Additionally on December 16, 2016, BTE AutoReiseZug night car train service was relaunched between Hamburg-Altona and Lörrach (near Basel, Switzerland) after being closed by DB. The train consists of sleeping cars, couchette coaches and car carriers. It operates on a seasonal timetable and is designed to reduce fuel costs and stress for the approximate 900 km (560 mi) north-south drive to the Swiss border.
  • On July 4, 2020, RDC-D launched the new ALPEN-SYLT Night Express service that connects the Alpine region with destinations such as the coasts of Schleswig-Holstein. The seasonal overnight passenger service is served by a fleet of 38 couchette coaches, which can be used as seating compartments during the daytime, and can be folded down into couchette compartments during nighttime.
